A (severely) worn-out hip often causes pain and stiffness. A hip replacement can provide a solution to alleviate this pain. During hip surgery, the hip joint is replaced with a hip replacement. After recovery, you can build mobility by cycling. In this article, we will tell you more about cycling after hip surgery.

How soon can you ride a bike after hip replacement?

After hip surgery, you first need to recover. You must gradually rebuild the muscle strength in the leg that was operated on. Always consult with your doctor or physical therapist about which movements you can and cannot do. Often, you need to wait at least 6 weeks after the surgery before cycling. After this period, you can start cycling after hip surgery in consultation with your treating physician.

Tips for cycling after hip surgery

Cycling is a great way to build mobility after hip surgery. On a bike, you do not directly strain the hip, but you do use the muscles in your legs. When you want to start cycling again, keep the following points in mind:

  • Wait at least 6 weeks after the surgery before you start cycling and consult your doctor first;
  • Warm up your muscles before cycling to reduce the risk of injuries;
  • Choose a route with flat roads without bumps;
  • Avoid making abrupt movements with the hip;
  • Ride a bike on which you feel safe and comfortable.

Moving after hip surgery with a low step-through bike

After hip surgery, you need to be careful with the movements you make with your hip. A standard two-wheel bike often has a higher step-through, requiring you to lift your leg high to get on. With the low step-through bike Balance, this is not necessary. The low step-through allows you to mount the bike without lifting your foot high. Additionally, you can always reach the ground with both feet on this bike. This provides security while cycling and prevents you from having to dismount at, for example, a traffic light. This makes the bike suitable for cycling again after hip surgery.

Cycling after hip surgery with a Van Raam tricycle

It may be that a two-wheel bike no longer provides enough stability and security after hip surgery. In that case, a tricycle can offer a solution. The three wheels make the bike stable, and the chance of falling during normal use is very small. Van Raam has various tricycles in its range. Check out a few below.
