Because Henk de Jonge (86) from Eindhoven can no longer cycle independently, he cycles together with a 'bike buddy' on a Van Raam Fun2Go side by side bike. Thanks to the side by side bike Henk has more mobility and freedom. Henk cycles with the project 'Fietsmaatjes Nuenen' ('bike buddies' Nuenen), which officially kicked off in April 2021. Henk (86) can no longer cycle alone. Six years ago, he suffered from a balance disorder. He told Studio040 (City Broadcasters of Eindhoven and surroundings): "My pulse was too low and I did not trust myself to cycle alone anymore".
Via the newspaper, Henk and his partner Irene came across the 'Fietsmaatjes'. Irene thought this would be very suitable for both of them and she really wanted to cycle together. Henk and Irene were welcome at Fietsmaatjes Nuenen. Irene as a volunteer and Henk as a guest/participant. Henk was reluctant at first because he is a bit older, but now he has completely changed his mind.
Henk likes cycling with the side by side electricbike very much. He has more balance and stability because of the three wheels of the bike and he likes the fact that his muscles are exercised in another way than walking. He tells Studio040: "You sit next to each other and are assigned to each other, so I keep chatting. I also really get to know Nuenen better. It's nice to cycle through quiet surroundings with windmills and the moor. I also like to stop for an ice cream".

Henk de JongeThe Fietsmaatjes Nuenen project started in April 2021. Due to corona it had been postponed for a year, but it could finally take place on April 2, partly due to the placement of protection screens on the side by side electric bikes. At the local fire station, two guests and two volunteers cycled on two side by side bikes during the kick-off.
Jan Zwaan, the chairmanof Fietsmaatjes Nuenen, opened the meeting and told more about Fietsmaatjes and what Fietsmaatjes can mean for Nuenen. Fietsmaatjes Nuenen was founded in a short time, with a board, 50 volunteers, 15 guests and two side by side electric bikes. During the meeting, City Counsel Member Ralf Stultiëns told more about the social importance of the Fietsmaatjes and the enthusiastic municipality of Nuenen (source: Rond de Linde).
The side by side bike Fun2Go is very suitable for cycling together. With this bike, you sit next to each other, making good communication possible. One person steers and brakes, the other is a co-rider and can pedal along.

Due to the corona virus, it is difficult to keep your distance when you want to cycle with the Fun2Go side by side bike. Therefore Van Raam offers the option of the protection screen; a physical barrier between the driver and the passenger. This allows everyone to make a ride together with the Fun2Go, without (possibly) infecting the other.
The protection screen is currently no longer available.
Fietsmaatjes (bike buddies) is an initiative where a volunteer and a guest make bicycle rides together on an side by side electric bike, this is often a Fun2Go by Van Raam. Cycling independently is often no longer possible for the guest, but with 'Fietsmaatjes' they can cycle again. Together, the bike buddies have a nice contact and they enjoy the surroundings while they stay healthy in motion.
The Fietsmaatjes project began in 2012 in Teylingen. Led by the couple Tekla Zwinkels and Jan Burgmeijer Fietsmaatjes Teylingen quickly became a success. At the end of 2019, more than 1,350 guests and 1,140 volunteers were cycling in the Netherlands on the many side by side bikes. In the meantime, these figures have increased significantly.
