3FM Serious Request is an annual charity initiative by a major Dutch radio station, raising funds for important causes. On December 18, 2024, the Van Raam team cycled over 80 kilometers with colleagues, traveling from Varsseveld to the Glass House in Zwolle. With this effort, we aimed to raise as much money as possible for the Metakids Foundation during Serious Request.

80 km ride to the Glass House

Starting at the Van Raam factory in Varsseveld, we rode to the Glass House in Zwolle using our own special needs bicycles. Our fleet included the Fun2Go, a tandem bike for a driver and a passenger, and the FunTrain, which connects to the Fun2Go, allowing two additional passengers to join. We also used the Easy Rider tricycle, the OPair wheelchair bike, the Balance low entry bike, and the Twinny Tandem bike.

Together with colleagues, we cycled more than 80 kilometers, raising funds for the Metakids Foundation. Our initial goal was to raise €3,000.

A stunning final result

After the ride, we were amazed by the results: we raised a remarkable €9,465! This incredible outcome was made possible by the support of so many people, and we’re immensely proud of the final amount.

About 3FM Serious Request

From December 18 to 24, 2024, 3FM Serious Request raised funds for Metakids. Popular 3FM DJs Barend van Deelen, Sophie Hijlkema, and Wijnand Speelman lived in the Glass House in Zwolle for six days, making live radio 24/7 and playing song requests for donations.

This annual charity event by one of the Netherlands' top radio stations united the country to support children with metabolic diseases. All proceeds went to the Metakids Foundation.

Metabolic Diseases

The Metakids Foundation supports children with metabolic diseases. These are the deadliest diseases among children in the Netherlands, with one child born with a metabolic disease every day. Metabolism is the process that converts nutrients from food into energy. In children with a metabolic disease, a genetic error disrupts this process, leading to life-threatening energy deficits and damage caused by unprocessed toxins. The impact of these diseases is severe - one in four children does not live past the age of 18. Without treatment, metabolic diseases are fatal for everyone.

Although significant research is already underway, early diagnosis makes a big difference. By advancing treatments such as gene therapy and medication, more children can be treated. However, funding is essential to continue this research and save more lives in the future. With sufficient funding, 50% of patients with metabolic diseases could be treated within the next decade.
