The Metakids Foundation supports children with metabolic diseases. These are the deadliest diseases among children in the Netherlands, with one child born with a metabolic disease every day. Metabolism is the process that converts nutrients from food into energy. In children with a metabolic disease, a genetic error disrupts this process, leading to life-threatening energy deficits and damage caused by unprocessed toxins. The impact of these diseases is severe - one in four children does not live past the age of 18. Without treatment, metabolic diseases are fatal for everyone.
Although significant research is already underway, early diagnosis makes a big difference. By advancing treatments such as gene therapy and medication, more children can be treated. However, funding is essential to continue this research and save more lives in the future. With sufficient funding, 50% of patients with metabolic diseases could be treated within the next decade.
